Effect of Baraka Oil on Blood Sugar in persons with Hyperglycemia
TOP

After one month of treatment with Baraka Oil on 55 patients whose blood sugar levels were above the normal range, 73% success rate was achieved. Mean blood sugar level of the patients was 199.27 mg /100 ml and 152.10 mg /100 ml before and after treatment respectively.

INTRODUCTION

High blood sugar level is known as Hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia is usually the first sign of diabetes mellitus which is an common ailment in the world.

However, when one considers sugar as a main product formed in the process of digestion, Ayurveda considers it as a part of “Rasa Dhatu”. “Ama Rasa” that is detrimental to the system is formed due to weak digestive process.

We prepare food, mixed with spices and other ingredients in order to add flavour and help in proper digestion, assimilation and absorption in to the body. Thus the collection of main product, detrimental to the system could be avoided. Therefore one of the aims of this experiment is to promote proper digestion by using an Ayurvedic drug in order to reduce blood sugar level.

Research reports have revealed a number of drugs, which could be used to reduce the sugar content in the blood. Kaluduru (
Nigella Sativa) is also an ingredient among the drugs, which are highly active on reducing blood sugar level. Kaluduru is a drug used in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of various illnesses. According to Ayurvedic system Kaluduru (Nigella Sativa) promotes proper digestion. Research work on the volatile oil of Kaluduru seeds have shown the ability to reduce the sugar content in the blood in experimental animals. It has also been revealed that “Kaluduru” reduces the blood sugar in normal experimental animals as well as the Alloxanized diabetic animals.

When humans with normal sugar content in blood were subjected to a preliminary study at the Institute of Indigenous Medicine, it was revealed that Baraka Oil (Oil of
Nigella Sativa) has the ability to reduce blood sugar level in human. Baraka Oil is obtained by crushing Nigella Sativa seeds. Therefore it is presumed that Baraka Oil has the same qualities of Nigella Sativa seeds.

This research work is intended for a comprehensive study on the sugar level of blood by using Baraka Oil on persons having high blood sugar level more than the normal level.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

Oil of Nigella Sativa which is known as Baraka Oil in the market was used as the test drug.

Nearly 55 persons including both sex was selected from the outdoor and indoor patients of Ayurveda Teaching Hospital, Borella, whose fasting blood sugar level is above 110 mg/dl and which cannot be checked by only a normal diet control. They should not take any other drugs which has an affect on blood sugar level.

Fasting blood sugar test was done at the beginning of experiment in all patients. Then the oil of Nigella Sativa (Baraka Oil) was given , twice a day for one month. Once a week they were examined to check their signs and symptoms of diabetic and the changes were recorded. Fasting blood sugar test was done after the treatment of one month. Fasting blood sugar level after drug, was analyzed statistically, with the initial levels.

RESULTS

Mean blood sugar level of the rest of the patients was 199.27 + 70.02 mg per 100 ml and 152.10 + 61.05 mg per 100 ml before and after the treatment. (Table 1).

Blood sugar content of the patients who were given the treatment for two month were 175.26 + 42.97 mg per 100 ml and 143.46 + 47.68 mg per 100 ml before and after the treatment (Table II)

The signs and symptoms of this group of patients were also not reduced satisfactorily while first group of patients had better relief from their signs and symptoms even at the end of one month treatment.

The change for FBS in 40 patients was highly significant when compares with the initial levels.

Baraka Oil effectually reduced the FBS level in 72.7 % patients whose blood sugar level was above the normal limit. The drug does not show remarkable effect in fifteen patients, may be due to the cause of the Psychosomatic status (biological variability) which is caused to the disease. According to Ayurveda this Psychosomatic state can be mention as “Prakruti” of the persons

DISCUSSION

After the treatment for one month 40 patients got rid of their symptoms. Though the FBS was reduced to some extent in seven more patients, their symptoms were not reduced. We assumed that the reduction of FBS may be a momental change. Even after the treatment for two months 15 patients did not showed a significant reduction of their values of FBS or the symptoms.

CONCLUSION

Baraka OIl is a useful drug to control the diabetic mellitus. It has Hypoglycemic effect on 72.7 per cent of the diabetic patients.

Further research is needed to analyse the “Prakruti” of the patients those who are helped with Baraka oil in the treatment of Diabetes.
